New Mexico Commission of Public Records - State Records Center and Archives

The New Mexico Office of the State Historian, a division of the State Records Center and Archives, is accepting applications for research fellowships. These fellowships are intended to defray living costs while conducting historical research at the State Records Center and Archives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Applications Must Include the Following:
  • A signed cover letter that includes a statement explaining the applicant's interest in the program, eligibility criterion, length of the fellowship requested, preferred dates of the fellowship and a detailed explanation of financial need.
  • An abstract, not to exceed 300 words, that defines the topic of the proposed research and summarize its objectives.
  • A research proposal, no more than six pages in length, that describes what is to be accomplished during the fellowship period; the status of the applicant's research on the proposed research topic; the specific relevance of the State Archives' collections to the project; the significance of the research to the advancement of an understanding and an appreciation of New Mexico history; and the expected results of the research.
  • A curriculum vitae, (no longer than four pages).
  • Copies of certified transcripts or diplomas.
  • Two letters of recommendation. If the applicant is a graduate student enrolled in a Ph.D. program, one of the letters will be from the applicant's dissertation chair or advisor. If the applicant is enrolled in a master's degree program, one of the letters will be from the student's graduate advisor.
  • The cover letter, the abstract, the proposal and the curriculum vitae will be produced in 12-point type and will be double spaced, with one inch margins on all sides. The applications will be collated with five copies attached.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered for funding.

FELLOWSHIP
TERMS & CONDITIONS

Fellowships will be awarded for a maximum of $1,000 per month, determined by financial need and budget availability.

The fellowships can be held from 1-2 months. Awards may be granted for a longer duration, depending upon proposed research and budget avail-ability.

Prior to the conclusion of the fellowship period, each fellow will be asked to give a public lecture based on research accomplished at the State Archives. Fellows will also be required to submit a report on their research at the State Archives as well as papers, manuscripts and articles produced as a result of the research.

FELLOWSHIP
ELIGIBILITY

Applicants may either hold a graduate degree or may be enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited college or university. Awards are also open to individuals that have independent scholar status.

Applicants may be studying or working in any field or discipline, provided that the proposed research will foster an understanding and appreciation of N.M. history.
