The Office of the State
Historian and the Historical Society of New Mexico will be accepting
applications for its Scholars Program beginning July 1, 2011. Funding
for fellowships in fiscal year 2012 is made possible through the
generosity of several non-profit organizations. Fellowships in the
amount of $1,000.00 will be awarded to graduate students and established
scholars to encourage research on topics of New Mexico history and
culture in New Mexico archival repositories. |

Fostering an understanding
and appreciation of New Mexico's history and culture through
education, research, preservation and community outreach.

Application for Fellowship:
- A signed cover letter that details the applicant's eligibility,
research project, and time frame of project.
- An abstract, not to exceed 300 words, which shall define the
topic of the proposed research and summarize its purpose and objectives.
- A research proposal, no more than six pages in length, which
shall describe what is to be accomplished during the fellowship
period.
- An up-to-date curriculum vitae, which does not exceed four pages
and which, in addition to academic and work experience, reflects
the applicant's full name, residential address, telephone numbers
and e-mail addresses.
- Copies of certified transcripts if the applicant is enrolled
in a graduate program or copies of graduate degrees received.
- Two letters of support. If the applicant is a graduate student,
one letter must come from the applicant's graduate advisor.
The cover letter, the abstract, the proposal and the curriculum
vitae must be collated (clipped, not stapled). Five copies must
be submitted by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be
considered for funding.
Post-Award Requirements:
Nov. 1, 2011 - Aug. 31 2012
- Awardees must complete 80 hours of research work at a New Mexico
archival repository containing material relative to the history
and cultures of New Mexico.
- Prior to the conclusion of the fellowship period, each fellow
is required to give a public lecture based on the research accomplished
during the fellowship period.
- Awardees must submit a report of research and a three-page or
longer, historical essay that may be included in the New Mexico
history web project or published in the Historical Society of
New Mexico La Cronica.
Funding will be made available after the three requirements have
been met.

FELLOWSHIP
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program
in an accredited college or university and be conducting research
toward a graduate degree at that institution;
or
Hold a graduate degree in any field or discipline from an accredited
college or university;
or
Be an independent scholar (an individual, regardless of academic
credentials, who is recognized as an authority in any field or
discipline that advances an understanding and appreciation of
New Mexico history. Independent scholars may include individuals
such as community historians, tribal elders, etc.).
